India is the world capital of diabetes with
over 50 million people suffering from it.
What is the reason behind it? Sedentary lifestyle, lack of exercise, bad
and irregular eating habits is some of the main reasons that the country
suffers from diabetes. Diabetes is a degenerating disease, slowly killing us by
the minute if we become victim to it. It leads to other complications like
blood pressure, low immunity, sight problems, kidney problems, in short, every
organ in our body dies a little bit every day. Many sufferers have had
amputations and suffered from blindness and kidney failures due to this dreaded
disease.
PREVENTION
IS BETTER THAN CURE
As a nation, let us take a vow that we will
change our lifestyle and way of living rather than become a victim of non-sweet
suffering. So what can we do to avoid this dreaded disease?
LOSE
WEIGHT
One of the most common reasons for increasing
the risk of getting diabetes is obesity. Obesity also causes other diseases
like heart diseases and some types of cancers. In order to stay away from these
future repercussions, bring your body weight down and try to stay within your
Body Mass Index.
EAT
VEGGIES REGULARLY
The greener the food, the healthier it is. Try to
reduce meat consumption is you can or avoid it altogether and pile on the
luscious green veggies on your plate. Low in calories, high in fibre, and a
source of optimum nutrition, these green vegetables will keep all diseases at
bay.
WALK
YOUR WAY TO BETTER HEALTH
Try to walk as much as possible in your daily life.
If your work schedule does not allow it, then set aside a specific time for
that all-important walk. Fast walking burns away calories. Aim to walk at least
10, 000 steps every day.
INCREASE
CEREAL AND WHOLE GRAIN CONSUMPTION
Increasing whole grains and cereal in your diet
greatly reduce your risk of getting diabetes, stroke, blood pressure and heart
disease. A bowl of oats every day keeps the doctor away.
DON’T
DRINK SUGAR
When thirsty, drink pure natural water rather
than going for sugary drinks. Tasty as they may be, they will not quench your
thirst properly. Avoid sodas, energy
drinks, fruit juices. Moderate tea and coffee consumption without sugar is all
right. If you do not like the taste of
water, squeeze some lemon juice into it. This will help you cleanse your system
and give you a Vitamin C boost.
SNACK
ON THE RIGHT FOODS
When feeling peckish, do not snack on
chocolates, biscuits or crisps, which are high in fat and sugar. Opt for
healthy snacks like fruit, nuts, or a slice of brown toast.
SET
ASIDE SOME “ME” TIME
Stress tends to send blood sugar levels
soaring. This sugar spike increases your heartbeat, quickening of breath and
knotting of the stomach.
Therefore, start your day with meditation or
yoga. Try and set aside Sundays for you – relax with your family, go out and
have some fun. Anything to get away from your daily routine.
Follow the above mantra to have a diabetic free
life. If you fall under one of the “risk” factors, i.e. hereditary, obesity or
high cholesterol, then make sure you have regular tests to check your blood
sugar. Stay away from diabetes and lead a healthy life.
